Program Activities

The Living Skills program is designed to help students develop self-confidence and competency in age appropriate life skills. Some of the areas covered in Living Skills include:

  • Money Management – opening  and managing a bank account
  • Health, Wellness and  Personal Care – doing laundry, personal hygiene, shopping and cooking
  • Restaurant Etiquette and Tipping – learning and practicing steps in independently dining out
  • Public Transportation – reading schedules, planning trips, taking public transportation
  • Interviewing Skills – prepare for an interview using STAR technique and interview with outside professional
  • Organizational Skills – develop and use strategies for organizing physical space, academic files and methods to approach multi-stepped tasks
  • Time Management – exploring apps and computer tools for scheduling, using daily and weekly schedules for planning
  • Community Service – projects to increase social awareness, community needs and self-concept

Students will have experiences to help them develop the skills to better understand social nuances through role-playing, mentoring and counseling groups. In addition, Pathways participants will be exposed to relevant cultural and social experiences

Daily Schedule

While there is rarely a ‘typical’ day during the Pathways program, on-campus days are built around the following schedule:

1:30 – 3:00 – SAT Prep
3:00 – Dismissal

Many skills are introduced in a classroom setting and then practiced in the community. On those days, the community activities would typically occur in the morning or over lunch, so students are back in time for SAT Prep.

During the week at Eastern University, daily activities are on-campus while evening activities may be community-based.
